Look no further than Service Masters for all of your automotive service and repair needs including the clutch. Our experienced technicians have worked with manual transmissions for years. We cannot only adjust the clutch every 6,000 miles to extend its life but also rebuild it or replace it when it finally does die. Give us a call today if your clutch is having any of the following problems.

The Clutch Feels Spongy

When you press down on the clutch, the pedal should give you the same resistance each time. If the pedal feels spongy or soft, the internal parts are wearing out and need to be replaced. We may be able to rebuild the clutch using new parts. If the clutch is severely damaged, however, we will have to replace the clutch. Generally, this happens at about 100,000 miles.

The Catch Point Is Higher

Another thing that is going to change about the clutch is where the catch or bite point is. Generally, this point starts to get higher when the clutch is going bad. Unfortunately, your muscle memory thinks that the catch point is in one spot when it has actually moved up. Consequently, you may start to have problems shifting the gears smoothly in your automobile.

The Clutch Smells Too Hot

You may also notice that your clutch smells extremely hot. This is an indication that it has slipped out of engagement. A slipping clutch generally needs to be replaced. It can no longer stay engaged to keep the power transferred from the engine to the transmission. Rather, it disengages even though you have not raised your foot. This can create the following problems.

I Cannot Shift the Gears

First, if the power is with the engine instead of the transmission, you will have extreme difficulties shifting the gears. The gear shift will feel stiff and the gears will grind when you force the change. We recommend that you avoid driving your automobile if you are having these problems. There is no point in causing unnecessary damage to the gears in your manual transmission.

My Acceleration Is Lagging

Another issue is that your acceleration is going to lag because, again, the power has been returned to the engine. The transmission needs the power in order to turn the drivetrain. If the transmission does not have the power, your wheels won’t turn, i.e., the acceleration will lag.
